Description

The Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) is an evergreen, fast-growing, medium-sized tree belonging to the Annonaceae family.

The plant’s flowers resemble a sea star and were traditionally used for therapeutic purposes, such as treating pneumonia and stomach pain.

Another common use of Ylang Ylang is as an antidepressant for alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety. It has also been reported that it can help lower blood pressure and possibly address hypertension.

According to folk traditions from India and the Indian Ocean islands, the leaves of the Ylang Ylang plant can, when applied topically, relieve itching and treat dandruff. Indians used Ylang Ylang to treat headaches, eye inflammations, and arthritis.

From the flowers of the Ylang Ylang plant, an incredibly fragrant essential oil is produced through steam distillation. Ylang Ylang essential oil is widely used in the food industry, perfumery, and aromatherapy. It has a moderate to strong, yet delicate fragrance, with fresh, floral, and slightly fruity notes.

Properties

Ylang Ylang essential oil is a very important raw material in perfumery. It is used in aromatherapy due to its antidepressant properties, as it helps lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety levels. Add a few drops of essential oil to a ceramic diffuser to create a relaxing atmosphere at the end of a tiring day. You can also add it to your bath water for a refreshing soak or use it as a room deodorizer. It is also common to add Ylang Ylang essential oil to scented candles.

In the beauty industry, Ylang Ylang essential oil is considered one of the best anti-aging essential oils. It can also be used to treat oily skin and acne.

Attention:

Essential oils are natural, effective, and particularly pleasant to use. Their therapeutic properties can benefit anyone. However, they should be treated with caution and care, following the recommended dosage, as they are considered medicinal.

  • Essential oils should not be ingested, (except for oregano, thyme, basil, and mint essential oils) and should only be used with a doctor’s advice.
  • During pregnancy, particularly in the first 5 months of gestation.
  • By individuals suffering from hypertension.
  • By individuals with serious neurological disorders.
  • On infants (children under one year old).

Essential oils should be used with caution in the following cases:

  • Some essential oils (e.g., Bergamot, Neroli, Lemon, etc.) can cause skin photosensitivity when exposed to UV rays. Generally, it is advised to avoid intense sun exposure for 4 hours after aromatherapy (massage).
  • Essential oils should be used diluted in a base (e.g., carrier oil) when in contact with the skin. It is recommended not to apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin.
  • “Vulnerable” age groups (children and individuals over 60) should use essential oils in reduced proportions.
