As the Holy Scriptures state, angels do not act on their own initiative but are sent by God when the divine will is to be revealed or executed in significant historical circumstances.

Both the Old and New Testaments contain many accounts of numerous occasions when an angel of the Lord appeared to deliver God’s will to a person.

At the head of the angelic hosts are the archangels Michael and Gabriel.

We encounter Michael in the stories of the Old Testament, such as when Abraham was about to sacrifice his son Isaac, when God decided to destroy Sodom but save Lot, and elsewhere. Archangel Michael was also the one who led the people of Israel in their exodus from Egypt.

We meet Archangel Gabriel in the New Testament. He is the one who brings the joyful message to the Theotokos during the Annunciation.

In memory of the apostles and the work that the angels perform, the Church has designated November 8th to be the feast of the Synaxis of the Archangels.

At Mount Athos, even the perishable material objects continue to live after their primary use. Thus, the wood used for this icon comes from a renovated cell on Mount Athos. The cracks in the old wood upon which the icon is placed bear witness to its years of life in the Garden of the Theotokos.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
