Description
Antiqued Lithograph with Saint Demetrius
An impressive antiqued lithograph of Saint Demetrius, the patron saint and protector of Thessaloniki. In the figure of Saint Demetrius, Thessaloniki sees its protector and liberator. Not only because the liberation of the city from the Turks in 1912 coincided with the feast day of the Saint, but also because, as tradition tells, before the liberation, the inhabitants of Thessaloniki saw the Saint riding on horseback at the White Tower, encouraging them. According to Christian tradition, Saint Demetrius lived and was martyred in Thessaloniki during the reign of Diocletian. He came from an aristocratic family and was an officer, but his position did not prevent him from accepting the Orthodox faith and being baptized as a Christian.
