What does Myrrh symbolize?

Myrrh is also called “oil of thanksgiving,” “chrism of thanksgiving,” or “heavenly chrism.” Its symbols in Orthodox tradition are numerous and particularly important as Myrrh symbolizes the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Furthermore, Myrrh symbolizes the fragrance of faith, the tenderness of the heart, and dedication to the Lord. As mentioned in the Gospel, a few days before the Crucifixion of Jesus, when He was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman approached Him with an alabaster jar of precious myrrh and anointed His head with it (Matt. 26:6-7).

From myrrh, the Myrrh-bearers received their name. These women, who followed the Lord along with the Virgin Mary, remained with her during the Passion of Jesus and made sure to anoint His body with myrrh, thus offering honors to their Teacher.
