Phytolacca, or Pokeweed (Phytolacca Decandra), is a small tree commonly found in Greece. Its name is derived from the Greek word “phyto” meaning plant, and the Arabic word “lacca,” which means color. The stems are reddish, the leaves are large and oval-shaped, the flowers are white, and the fruits are round and dark-colored, resembling grapes. In the past, in many parts of Greece, the black, juicy fruits were used to color wine. However, this practice was prohibited because the plant, when fresh, is considered highly toxic. On the other hand, its use in tincture form has therapeutic effects without the dangerous side effects of the fresh plant.

Phytolacca contains alkaloid resins, triterpenoid saponins, tannins, phytolaccic acid, and formic acid. Its components have a strong lipolytic action, and consumption of the tincture is believed to contribute to combating localized fat. As for its therapeutic properties, it is recommended for infections of the upper respiratory system as it helps cleanse the lymph nodes and reduce congestion. It is thought to effectively aid in the treatment of laryngitis, tonsillitis, and mumps. It is also considered a natural remedy for lymphatic issues, especially mastitis, and for chronic rheumatism. In the case of excessive dosage, it acts as a powerful laxative and emetic.

The tincture is created by steeping herbs in an alcoholic solution (grapa), usually over a period of a few weeks. During this, the active ingredients of the herbs dissolve in the alcoholic solution. This specific process results in the tincture retaining all the beneficial properties of the herbs to the fullest.

Δοσολογία:

15-20 drops in water twice a day for a month. Take a break for ten days and repeat. Shake before use.
