Description

Primula gets its name from the Latin word “primus,” which means “first,” as the plant blooms at the beginning of spring. It has fuzzy, narrow leaves and fragrant deep yellow flowers that resemble little bells.

The over-harvesting of the plant has made it extremely rare, so it should only be collected when found in abundance, and even then, in limited quantities.

It contains (mainly in its leaves) vitamin C and minerals. It also contains saponins (over 10%), glycosides, flavonoids, enzymes, and various other compounds. The crown and its rhizome contain essential oils.

Properties:

It is an excellent relaxing and calming herb. It soothes stress reactions and tension, relaxes nerve overstimulation, and promotes restful sleep. It also acts against nervous headaches.

It is used for bronchitis, the common cold, and cough.

Its root is used as an expectorant, diuretic, antispasmodic, and analgesic.

Externally, it has bruise-healing properties.

It combats arthritis and rheumatism.

It helps with skin conditions. Its flowers, in the form of an ointment, are used for sunburns, measles, skin spots, and more.

It strengthens the heart and the nervous system.

Other uses

The fresh leaves and root have the characteristic scent of anise. Its flowers have a delicate and sweet fragrance and can be added to salads, desserts, and made into a pleasant and refreshing herbal tea.

The leaves and flowers are used to make jam.

Dosage

Infusion: Pour one cup of boiling water over 2 tsp of petals and let it steep for 10-15 minutes. Drink 3 times a day.

Decoction: Add 1 tsp of the plant’s root to a cup of water, bring it to a boil, reduce the heat, and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Drink one cup three times a day.

Attention!

The leaves of some exotic species of primula can cause dermatitis in people with sensitive skin.

In general, primula should not be used during pregnancy, by those allergic to aspirin, or in large doses, as it may cause diarrhea or vomiting.

Caution is also required in its use, especially for those who suffer from gastrointestinal disorders.
