Description

Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Mount Athos, Made from a Unique Olive Variety (Athonite Cherry Olive)

In recent years, the organic cultivation of the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos’ estates has resulted in the production of this exceptional organic olive oil, available in limited quantities. This Extra Virgin Olive Oil boasts an acidity level of just 0.1%. It provides a wealth of nutrients, making it a beneficial and essential part of a healthy diet. Its high content of vitamins and fatty acids helps the body effectively combat free radicals, which are particularly harmful to health. Known as the “gold of the Mediterranean” and the foundation of the renowned Mediterranean diet, this olive oil represents the best of its kind.

Ingredients and Properties

Olive oil is rich in vitamin E, monounsaturated fatty acids (up to 83%), and antioxidants like polyphenols. It is a significant source of monounsaturated fats, which lower the risk of heart disease by reducing blood lipids. In fact, the World Health Organization recommends consuming two tablespoons of olive oil daily to protect heart health.

The protective effect of monounsaturated fats on cholesterol levels is widely acknowledged. A large portion of olive oil’s health benefits comes from its high monounsaturated fat content. Additionally, the phenolic compounds in olive oil help prevent and protect against cardiovascular risk factors. They also exhibit anti-inflammatory and chemoprotective properties, with particular emphasis on oleocanthal, a compound in olive oil with strong anti-inflammatory effects. Furthermore, studies have shown a positive correlation between monounsaturated fat intake and improved bone density.

Mediterranean Diet

Today, olive oil is the cornerstone of the Mediterranean dietary pyramid, proven to be a model for healthy eating and longevity. The 2006 EUROLIVE study provided robust evidence for the protective role of olive oil’s phenolic components. Conducted with 200 healthy volunteers from across Europe, the study demonstrated its protection against oxidative stress. Specifically, it found increased HDL (good cholesterol) levels and reduced markers of lipid oxidative stress. Additionally, the study reported a 13% reduction in DNA oxidation markers, comparable to levels seen after quitting smoking.
