Description

Mount Athos Extra Virgin Olive Oil of Limited Production

Mount Athos extra virgin olive oil from Erimos from Mikra Agia Anna is of superior quality. It is produced directly from olives harvested in early autumn by hand and only by mechanical methods. Without the use of pesticides, it is produced by cold pressing ensuring a rich taste and all the valuable ingredients of green olive oil.

It is a product of limited production, resulting from the special combination of hard work and patience and perseverance of the monks with the unique climate of the area. A particularly inaccessible and mostly arid place, which is why it has the name “desert”. Machinery and tractors are impossible to reach this point, so the olives are carved and picked only by hand, while the monks themselves carry the sacks with the fruit on their backs to the point where they will load them on the mules.

By cold pressing

This particular olive oil is produced by the method of cold pressing. This means that the extraction of olive oil is done by pressure and without adding temperature. It is worth mentioning that cold-pressed olive oils stand out for their aroma, color, and taste and their acidity is particularly low. They are rich in sterols and fatty acids, as well as antioxidants. Keep in a cool & shady place, away from the sun.

Ingredients and Properties

Olive oil is rich in vitamin E, monounsaturated fatty acids (up to 83%) and antioxidants, polyphenols. It is also a rich source of monounsaturated fatty acids, which reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood lipids. In fact, even the World Health Organization recommends consuming two tablespoons of olive oil a day to protect the heart.

The protective effect of monounsaturated fatty acids on cholesterol levels is now widely known. In fact, a large percentage of the protective properties of olive oil are attributed to its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids. It has also been found that the phenolic components of olive oil contribute to the prevention and protection against risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, while it has been documented that they have anti-inflammatory and chemoprotective properties. In particular, special mention is made of olive oil oleocanthal, which seems to have strong anti-inflammatory action.

Mediterranean Diet

Today, olive oil is the basis of the Mediterranean food pyramid, which has proven to be a model of proper and healthy nutrition and a factor of longevity. The European EUROLIVE study presented, in 2006, documented evidence for the protective role of phenolic components of olive oil. The experiments of this study were carried out on 200 healthy volunteers from all over Europe and demonstrated protection against oxidative stress. In particular, there was an increase in HDL (good cholesterol) levels, and reduced markers of lipid oxidative stress. In addition, the same study showed a 13% reduction in markers of DNA oxidation, comparable to the amounts seen after smoking cessation.
