Icons are living pieces of Orthodox tradition and points of intercession. The icon of Archangel Gabriel (November 8) is special because the wood “served” for many years in a cell of Mount Athos and was transformed into a collectible icon after its renovation.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

Description

Icon of Archangel Gabriel on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful serigraph of Archangel Gabriel created on naturally aged wood from the Garden of the Virgin Mary. In this icon, Archangel Gabriel is depicted full-body, wearing a purple tunic and a green mantle. In his hand, he holds the lily, which is believed to have been offered to the Virgin Mary during the Annunciation as a symbol of purity.

Numerous interventions and blessings by Archangel Gabriel are recorded in both the Old and New Testaments. Specifically, he was the one who revealed to the prophet Daniel the duration of the Israelites’ captivity and that, after four hundred and ninety-seven years, Christ would come to Earth.

Archangel Gabriel served the mystery of God’s incarnate economy from beginning to end. He was the one who brought the news to Zechariah that he would have a son, John the Baptist, and to Joachim and Anna that they would bear the Most Holy Theotokos. Gabriel nurtured the ever-virgin Mary for twelve years while she lived in the temple, in the Holy of Holies, with heavenly food. He was the one who brought her the joyful news, the Annunciation, that she would give birth to the Son of God.

Our Church celebrates the two Archangels, Michael and Gabriel, on November 8th.

The uniqueness of this icon lies in the ancient wood on which the image of Archangel Gabriel is placed. It is wood that has been used for many years in Mount Athos and has been carefully and artistically transformed into an icon. The cracks in the old wood where the icon is placed bear witness to the years of its life in Mount Athos.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
