Description

Lithograph with Panagia Odigitria

An amazing icon with Panagia Odigitria. The original icon of Panagia Odigitria was originally located in the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos from where, however, it miraculously disappeared. According to tradition, the icon of Odigitria disappeared twice during 1730. In both cases there was no violation of the Monastery and the icon was finally located in the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos. Finally, the fathers of the Vatopedi Monastery realized that the icon was miraculously disappearing and did not want to oppose the decision of the Virgin Mary. Since then, the icon of Panagia Odigitria is located inside the katholikon of the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos.

Lithograph: Features

The hagiographer who painted the icon with the representation of Panagia Odigitria used the technique of lithography creating in this way a work of unparalleled beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the hagiography workshops of the Athonite State. In fact, the artificial aging of hagiography is handmade, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos pay particular attention.
