Description

Serigraph of Saint George on Naturally Aged Wood

An image of Saint George, one of the most popular saints in the entire Christian world, on naturally aged wood from Mount Athos.

Saint George the Great Martyr and Trophy-Bearer was born around 275 AD in Cappadocia to Christian parents. His father died as a martyr for Christ when George was only ten years old. When he turned 18, he enlisted in the Roman army, quickly rising to higher ranks, and even the emperor Diocletian highly valued him.

However, he did not hesitate to confess his faith in front of the emperor, who had begun a campaign to eradicate Christians. Diocletian became enraged, imprisoned George, and subjected him to a series of tortures. One night, while imprisoned, Saint George dreamt of Christ, who announced his death and entry into eternal life. Indeed, the next day, Diocletian ordered his beheading.

Saint George is considered the patron saint of Infantry and the Army. His feast day is celebrated on April 23. However, if this date falls within Lent (before Easter), his feast is celebrated the day after Easter (Bright Monday).

The uniqueness of this icon arises not only from the creator’s stunning technique but also from the wood used by the monk who created this magnificent work. It is naturally aged wood, salvaged from the renovation of a monastic cell on Mount Athos. The monks kept it, cut it using special techniques, and preserved it to ultimately give it new life through a new purpose.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
