Theotokos En Blachernais
Portable icon of the Virgin of Blacherna
The temple of Blacherna, dedicated to the Theotokos, was one of the most sacred places of pilgrimage in Constantinople and rare and valuable relics of Byzantium were found there. Among them, from the 8th century, there is evidence of the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary with Christ, about which we know nothing more.
Another icon of Blachernitissa, whose exact iconographic type we do not know, is said to have been discovered during the renovation of the temple by Roman III Argyros. On the right side of the church there was also a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, in front of which, on Friday Vespers, the Byzantines sometimes experienced the miracle of her revelation, as the arrow withdrew and released her face and returned to its place on Sunday, the same time.
In Sinai, an icon of the 13th century is preserved, with the Virgin Mary in a bust and Christ in a medallion, without an inscription. Many variations of this type exist, such as standing and bound with open arms and Christ in a medallion or not, in her bosom.
