Handmade Pyrography Depicting Saint Sophia and Her Three Daughters

An exceptional icon created using the pyrography technique, depicting Saint Sophia and her three daughters—Faith, Hope, and Love. This unique piece has been crafted entirely by hand.

Saint Sophia and her daughters Faith, Hope, and Love were martyred during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117–138 A.D.). Their names are drawn from the well-known passage in the New Testament: “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13).

Saint Sophia, a pious and devout woman, became a widow at a young age and moved to Rome with her three daughters. There, they became known for their Christian faith and were soon reported to the emperor. Upon hearing of them, Hadrian ordered their arrest.

After separating the mother, the authorities began to interrogate the daughters. First to appear before the emperor was 12-year-old Faith. With persuasive words, Hadrian tried to convince her to deny Christ, promising her a life of comfort and happiness. But Faith remained steadfast. She responded with the words of Scripture: “**I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me**.” (Galatians 2:20). She was then brutally tortured and ultimately beheaded.

Next came 10-year-old Hope, who answered in the same spirit when asked whether such suffering was worth it: “**We have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe**.” (1 Timothy 4:10). She too was beheaded shortly afterward.

Finally, 9-year-old Love declared that her life was devoted “**to the love of God and the endurance of Christ**.” (2 Thessalonians 3:5). She was also martyred by beheading.

Proud of her daughters’ unwavering faith, Saint Sophia buried them with honor and spent three days by their graves, praying for God to take her as well. Her prayer was heard, and she passed away peacefully beside them.

This remarkable icon blends the art of engraving with pyrography, resulting in a beautifully textured, embossed finish.
