Description

Lithograph with Saint Paisios

A lithograph of Saint Paisios of Mount Athos, who became widely known for his life and work. Saint Paisios was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on January 13, 2015, and the Orthodox Church commemorates his memory on July 12. In 2017, he was proclaimed the patron saint of the military branch of Communications, by a decision of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece. In his final years, he lived in the cell of Panagouda on Mount Athos, where many people visited him to listen to him and receive his blessing. He lived an intense ascetic life, with minimal rest, only 2 to 3 hours per day. After his death, he was buried in the Holy Hesychasterion of Saint John the Theologian in Sourpi, Thessaloniki.

Lithograph: Characteristics

In this particular image, the iconographer monk used the lithography technique to create a work of exceptional beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this piece following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite State. The artificial aging of the icon is handmade, a process in which the monks of Mount Athos place great importance.
