Description

Antiqued Lithograph of Saint Miltiades

Saint Miltiades, also known as Melchiades, was the Pope of Rome (311–314 AD). According to historical records, he was of African origin and was called Melchiades the African. It is noteworthy that Saint Miltiades became Pope after the Roman Emperor Galerius issued an edict that ended the persecutions against Christians. During his papacy, edicts on religious tolerance were issued by the Roman emperors Galerius, Constantine, and Licinius. Saint Miltiades or Melchiades was martyred under Emperor Maximinus and was buried on the Appian Way. His memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on April 10th.
