Description

Antiqued Lithograph of Saint Cyriacus

Saint Cyriacus (September 29) was a man who cultivated patience and gentleness, which is why he succeeded in his ascetic life.

He was born in Corinth in the 5th century AD, to a priest father, John. His mother’s name was Eudoxia, and he had a brother, Archbishop Peter of Corinth.

At a young age, he went to Jerusalem and then to the Lavra of Saint Euthymius. There he was tonsured a monk and asceticized near the hermit Gerasimus. When Gerasimus died, Cyriacus returned to the Lavra of Euthymius, where with zeal, he cultivated his virtues. At the age of forty, he was ordained a priest in the Lavra of Souka and took over the administration of the Sacred Vessels.

What distinguished him from his fellow monks was the serene manner with which he dealt with them, which made him an example for all to follow. At the age of seventy, Cyriacus left there and traveled to many monasteries and hermitages, where he lived with the strictest asceticism. He died at the age of 107, leaving behind the memory of the ascetic who displayed “gentleness towards all men.”

Antiqued Lithograph: Characteristics

This particular image was created using the lithography technique, which is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is also used by several monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging. The lithography technique in iconography is essentially a printing technique.
