Saint Athanasios was born in 295 A.D. His family was facing financial difficulties, which deprived him of the opportunity for higher studies. Endowed with rich spiritual gifts, he studied on his own to obtain a higher education, beyond the basic education he received.

His inclination towards the Church was evident from his youth. At the age of 25 he was ordained deacon by the Patriarch of Alexandria Alexander, whom he followed at the First Ecumenical Council in 325 AD in Nicaea, Bithynia. There, Saint Athanasius became a pioneer in condemning the heretical teaching of Arius.

At the age of 33, in 328 AD, Athanasius was solemnly elected Patriarch of Alexandria. He receives a huge war from the heretical followers of Arius. Saint Athanasios, however, thanks to his strong faith in God and his great spirituality, manages to emerge victorious. In addition to the war of heretics, he faced temptations and hardships. He was sent into exile five times by Emperor Constantine II, who was a follower of Arianism.

Saint Athanasius was Patriarch of Alexandria for forty-six years. During his Patriarchy he was the “pillar of the Church” and the par excellence “father of Orthodoxy.

Saint Athanasius passed away peacefully in 373 A.D. The Church classifies him in the choir of its so-called Great Saints and honors his memory on January 18

Sandblasted Gold Printing: Features

In the icon with the representation of Saint Athanasios, the hagiographer monk used the technique of gold printing creating a work of unique beauty. Gold-stamping is a kind of hot-stamping technique. Hot-stamping is the method by which very thin metal gold sheet is placed on surfaces such as wood, leather, cardboard, plastic by pressing a heated embossed plate (plate) on our surface. Around the image you also use the technique of sandblasting, it is the technical treatment that achieves the corrosion of part or all of a surface by pouring sand under pressure.
