Description

Lithograph of the Panagia Tricherousa

The original icon of Panagia Tricherousa belongs to the iconographic type of the Hodegetria and is attributed to Saint Luke. This particular icon is located at Mount Athos, specifically at the Hilandar Monastery, and is one of the most famous miraculous icons. The original icon is the one in which Saint John of Damascus sought refuge and prayed while holding his severed right hand, with which he wrote his works in defense of the icons.

According to tradition, the hand of John of Damascus was severed by the order of the iconoclasts as a punishment and a lesson. However, the Virgin Mary healed his severed hand, and he dedicated a silver votive in the shape of a hand, which in the icon’s position appears as a third hand of the Virgin.

Lithograph: Characteristics

This particular image of the Panagia Tricherousa has been created using the lithography technique. The monk who created this work was trained in the iconography workshops of the monasteries of Mount Athos, where he learned both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial aging, a practice in which the monks of the Athonite State place special emphasis. Lithography in iconography is a printing technique.
