Description

Serigraph of the Weeping Virgin on Naturally Aged Wood

An exceptional serigraph of the Weeping Virgin, depicted without the infant Jesus.

The original icon of the Weeping Virgin was painted in 1972 at Mount Athos by Elder Joasaph and was later sent to New Olynthos in Halkidiki. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary healed a child in New Olynthos, and the child’s father made a vow to build a church in the area. However, he did not know which image of the Virgin to dedicate the church to, and time passed without him making a decision. At one point, according to tradition, the Theotokos appeared to him in a dream and asked him to go to Mount Athos, find Elder Joasaph, and ask him to paint the Weeping Virgin, which is celebrated on August 23.

This particular icon stands out not only for its incredible craftsmanship but also for the wood used as its base. The artist who created it used naturally aged wood from a cell at Mount Athos, which was restored. This stunning work of art carries with it a small piece of the history of this sacred place, as it was once part of it.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
