Aged Serigraph of the Virgin Rose of the Incorruptible

An exquisite aged serigraph created on natural fir wood. A rare depiction of the Virgin with the young Christ in a standing posture, wearing episcopal garments and a mitre on His head. The Virgin is shown holding the stem of a Jericho rose in her right palm, while in her left arm, she cradles the infant Christ and a stalk of wheat.

The Rose of Jericho, also known as the Virgin’s Rose or the immortal rose of the Resurrection, is a plant symbolizing eternity and the incorruptible, immortal nature of the soul because it never dies.

It originates from the Jordanian regions. It is the desert rose. Tradition says that the Rose of Jericho accompanied the Virgin on her solitary journey from Jerusalem to Egypt, and that, out of respect for her grace, it would bloom beside her at each stop, then close again to follow her steps in the desert whenever she continued on her way!

The Virgin wept with emotion, and the roses bloomed from her tears! She blessed them to never die!

Serigraph – Characteristics

The serigraph is a widely used technique in iconography, which is taught and employed in many iconography workshops, including those of Mount Athos. In icons created with this technique, monks use traditional methods, meaning the iconographer paints much of the icon by hand with minimal technological involvement. The aging technique of the icons is also handmade, adding collectible value to these works. These are exact replicas of Byzantine art, with a strong charm of the old. The icon is painted with exceptional quality materials on natural wood, and the painted surface is coated with pure beeswax, ensuring that the colors of the icon remain unchanged over time.
