Description
Lithograph of the Theotokos Pantanassa
A lithograph with handmade artificial aging depicting the Theotokos Pantanassa. The original icon of the Theotokos Pantanassa is a portable icon, dating back to the 17th century, and is housed in the katholikon of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi. It is considered particularly miraculous. According to stories from the monks of the Monastery, one of the miracles of this icon occurred when a young man visited the monastery one day and went to venerate the icon. At that moment, the face of the Theotokos suddenly shone, and an invisible force knocked him to the ground. Once he recovered, he confessed with tears to the monks that he had been living far from God and had been practicing magic. The miraculous intervention of the Theotokos led the young man to change his life.
Lithograph: Characteristics
In the image of the Theotokos Pantanassa, the iconographer monk used the technique of lithography to create a work of unique beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this piece following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite State. Moreover, the artificial aging of the icon is handmade, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos attach great importance.
