Aged Serigraph of the Virgin Megalochari

An exquisite aged serigraph created on natural fir wood, depicting the Virgin Megalochari. According to Christian tradition, the Virgin received the title Megalochari (Greatly Gracious) due to the great grace she received from the Lord when she heard the archangelic greeting “Hail, Full of Grace, the Lord is with you.” The most well-known image of the Virgin Megalochari is the one from Tinos. According to religious tradition, the church of the Virgin of Tinos was built at the site where an icon of the Theotokos was found after visions experienced by a nun.

This was Nun Pelagia from the Monastery of Kechrovouni, who in 1822 had a vision of the Virgin urging her to find a miraculous icon of hers. It is said that she had the same dream three Sundays in a row before excavation began, but it proved fruitless. The icon was actually found much later, at the end of January 1823. The discovery, following the nun’s vision, was considered a great miracle, which was inevitably linked to the Greek Revolution.

Serigraph – Characteristics

The serigraph is a widely used technique in iconography, which is taught and employed in many iconography workshops, including those of Mount Athos. In fact, in icons created with this technique, the monks use traditional methods, meaning the iconographer paints much of the icon by hand, with minimal technological involvement. The aging technique of the icons is also handmade, giving these works collectible value. These are exact replicas of Byzantine art, with a strong charm of the old. The icon is painted with exceptional quality materials on natural wood, and the painted surface is coated with pure beeswax, ensuring that the colors of the icon remain unchanged over time.
