Description

Icon with gold leaf on a natural piece of wood, handcrafted by the Monks of Mount Athos

An excellent iconography depicting the Virgin of Kardiotissa.

The original image of Cardiotissa got the specific name, as the Mother of God holds Jesus on the left side of her lap, in the heart area. It is said to have been the work of Saint Lazarus, a monk and iconographer, and it has a long history, which is estimated to begin in the period of iconoclasm. In fact, that icon was stolen from a monastery in Crete, where it was located, and transferred to the church of Agios Alphonsus in Rome. Panagia the Cardiotissa was replaced, however she was again stolen at least three times by the Turks, but always returned to the monastery.According to tradition, she was once chained to a marble pillar to prevent theft, but even then she was stolen along with the pillar. However, some time later, Panagia Kardiotissa returned to her place in the monastery.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
