Description

Aged Lithograph Featuring the Theotokos Gorgoepikoos
One of the many titles attributed to the Theotokos is “Theotokos Gorgoepikoos.” As is well known, the miraculous icon of the Theotokos Gorgoepikoos has been housed in the Monastery of Docheiariou on Mount Athos since 1646. The icon received this name following a miraculous event. According to tradition, one of the monks was walking past the icon, holding lit torches, and darkened the image until he heard a voice asking him to stop.

The monk ignored the voice and continued, only to soon lose his sight. Realizing that the voice was that of the Theotokos, he begged her for mercy. The compassionate Mother of God heard his prayer and restored his sight, saying, “I am the Lady of this Monastery and I quickly respond to those who call upon me, granting them their requests for salvation.”

Lithograph: Characteristics
Using a lithographed reproduction of Byzantine art, the monk-iconographer created this piece following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the Holy Mount Athos. The artificial aging process is done by hand, which gives the image of the Theotokos Gorgoepikoos a collectible value. Lithography in iconography is a printing technique that was invented in 1798.

The icon is available upon request.
