Gold Blasting with Panagia Axion Esti

It is an icon in the hagiographic type of Axion Esti with the technique of gold printing. The Most Holy Theotokos holds Jesus in her right arms. The hand of Christ is under the maphorium of the Virgin Mary. This shows the dependence of Christ’s humanity on his Mother. Christ holds a scroll in His right hand that writes Isaiah’s prophecy: “The Spirit of the Lord upon me, who has anointed me…” (Prop. Isaiah 61:1).

Icons such as this were used against heretics for the iconographic proclamation and formulation of the Orthodox doctrine of the Church regarding the incarnation of God the Word.

Sandblasted Gold Printing: Features

In the icon with the representation of Panagia Axion Esti the hagiographer monk used the technique of gold printing creating a work of unique beauty. Gold-stamping is a kind of hot-stamping technique. Hot-stamping is the method by which very thin metal foil is glued on surfaces such as wood, leather, cardboard, plastic by pressing a heated embossed plate (plate) on our surface. Around the image you also use the technique of sandblasting, it is the technical treatment that achieves the corrosion of part or all of a surface by pouring sand under pressure.
