Initially, the institution of the Elder was linked to monastic life. Each novice monk, as a “submissive”, had his Elder, that is, an experienced and wise older monk who guided him in the ascetic life. To him he owed absolute obedience.
In recent decades the term Elder has been used in a different sense from the above. For it was given to monks and priests whose spiritual influence extended to Christians outside their monasteries and retreats. Even married elders, whose godly life, action, and gifts were welcomed and admired by their flock.
In this series, the life of such a person is condensed in a few pages of each issue, so that the reader can know what ultimately classifies him in the chorus of “Modern Elders”.
