An exceptional icon depicting the Immaculate Virgin Mary.

In Orthodox iconography, the Immaculate Virgin Mary is also known as the Virgin of the Passion because Christ gazes at the two Angels depicted on either side of the Virgin, holding the symbols of the Passion—namely, the Cross, the Lance, and the Sponge. In the face of Christ, one can discern a frightened expression, which is explained by the fact that what He sees before Him are His Passion and the Sacrificial Death on the Cross.

The name of the icon comes from the hymn of the Apolytikion, “Aspile, Amolinte, Achrante…” which was composed by the monk Paul.
