Description

Icon of the Holy Belt on Naturally Aged Wood

The Precious or Holy Belt of the Virgin Mary is the only sacred relic associated with the earthly life of the Theotokos. It is a belt that the Virgin herself made from camel hair.

The history of the Holy Belt begins with the Dormition of the Theotokos. According to the Scriptures, the Virgin Mary was buried wearing this belt. It reached the hands of the Apostle Thomas in a miraculous manner.

The Holy Belt was kept by Christians in Jerusalem until Emperor Arcadius transferred it with great ceremony to Constantinople, where it was placed in a relic box called the “Holy Soron.”

The miraculous Holy Belt of the Virgin Mary saved the Empire from great disasters. It was the refuge and hope of the faithful who gathered to venerate it.

Today, the only remaining part of the Holy Belt of the Virgin Mary is kept at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos.

The Church honors the deposition of the Holy Belt of the Theotokos on August 31st.

At “Agioritic Kleronomia,” you can find these collectible icons to hold a piece of the living Athonite tradition.

Since the icon is handmade and the woodwork is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available by special order.
