An amazing image depicting the Annunciation of the Theotokos in serigraph on naturally aged wood (March 25th).
The feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos is a major feast in the Orthodox Church, both a Feast of the Lord and a Theotokos feast. It is considered a Feast of the Lord because it refers to the Lord Christ, who was conceived in the womb of the Theotokos, and a Theotokos feast because it refers to the person who contributed to the conception and incarnation of the Word of God, the Virgin Mary. It is one of the most important celebrations in Orthodoxy, as it marks the beginning of salvation for humanity.
The Annunciation is essentially the joyful news that the Virgin Mary received from the Archangel Gabriel, announcing that she would bring Jesus Christ into the world in a miraculous way. According to the Evangelist Luke, the event took place in Nazareth. Sent by God, the Archangel Gabriel encountered Mary in her dwelling place and greeted her with the words: “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you.” The Virgin, upon hearing the announcement that she would conceive, was astonished and asked how this could happen, as she had no husband. The Archangel then reassured her that the Holy Spirit would take care of everything. Mary’s response: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word,” shows her absolute submission and trust in God’s will.
The stunning iconography created by the monk and the aged wood, confirmed by the cracks running through its surface, are two of the key elements that make this icon collectible. In addition to the beautiful depiction of the Virgin Mary, the monk used naturally aged wood from a restored cell on Mount Athos as the base for the icon.
As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
