Description

Excavated Lithograph with Saint Paisios the Saint

Arsenios Eznepidis, as was his secular name, was born in Farasa, Cappadocia. On August 7, 1924, one week before they left for Greece, as part of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, he was baptized by the parish priest of Arsenios, whom the Orthodox Church recognized as a Saint in 1988.

The ranking of Agios Paisios as a saint of the Orthodox Church was carried out by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on January 13, 2015, while the Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on July 12. In 2017, he was declared the patron saint of the military weapon of Diavibas, by decision of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece. He spent his last years in the cell of Panagouda on Mount Athos, where crowds of people visited him to listen to him and receive his blessing. He lived an intense ascetic life, with minimal rest of 2 to 3 hours a day. After his death, he was buried in the Holy Hermitage of Saint John the Theologian in Souroti, Thessaloniki.

In this particular image, the hagiographer monk used the lithography technique, creating a work of unique beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the State of Athens. In fact, the artificial aging of the iconography is done by hand, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos give special importance.

As the image is handmade and the wood processing is done entirely by hand, there may be slight variations in the dimensions of each image.
