Description

Engraved Lithograph of the Mystical Supper

On Thursday, before being led to the cross, Jesus hosted the Mystical Supper for His disciples in Jerusalem, where Judas betrayed Him. Before the supper began, Jesus washed the feet of all His disciples Himself, teaching humility through this act. He then sat at the table and, taking bread in His hands, said, “Take, eat.” He did the same with the cup of wine, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood. Do this in remembrance of Me.” In this way, He delivered the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist to humanity.

The meaning of the Mystical Supper reflects the two aspects of love: joy and sorrow, light and darkness. Christ’s love for His disciples and humanity brings redemption from sin. However, Judas’s love for thirty pieces of silver is destructive, leading him from light to darkness. On Holy Thursday, the Church commemorates the Mystical Supper, the institution of the Holy Eucharist by the Lord Himself.

Engraved Lithograph: Features

The artwork is entirely handcrafted, without machinery, on engraved natural wood. It is the work of Athanasios, a student of the Athoniada Ecclesiastical Academy, who remains faithful to Byzantine art as taught on Mount Athos. His works are coated with pure beeswax to ensure durability over time.

In this icon, the monk-iconographer used the lithography technique to create a masterpiece of unique beauty. Specifically, by using a lithographed replica of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this piece following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite State. The artificial aging of the icon is also done by hand, a process to which Mount Athos monks attach great importance.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is entirely processed by hand, slight variations in the dimensions of each icon may occur.

The icon is available upon request.
