Excavated Lithography with Archangel Michael Mandamados

The amazing story of the original image begins when pirates arrived on the island of Lesvos and attacked a monastery, which was located a few kilometers beyond the fortified state called Stenakas. The pirates slaughtered the monks, and only one novice monk escaped, who climbed onto the roof and stayed there. Unfortunately, however, the pirates spotted him there too, but as soon as they tried to catch him the roof turned into a stormy sea and next to the young monk appeared the towering figure of a soldier with his sword, whom he recognized as the Archangel Michael.After this miracle, the young cadet painted the figure of the Archangel using, along with the rest of the materials, the blood of the slaughtered monks.

Excavated Lithography: Characteristics

The work is crafted entirely by hand, without machines, in hollowed out natural wood. It is the work of the iconographer Athanasios, a student of the Athonias Ecclesiastical Academy, who remains faithful to Byzantine art as he was taught on Mount Athos. His works are covered with pure beeswax so that they remain unchanged over time.

In this particular image, the hagiographer monk used the lithography technique, creating a work of unique beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the State of Athens. In fact, the artificial aging of the iconography is done by hand, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos give special importance.
