Seal for Prosphoro of Mount Athos – Symbolism

The Prosphoro is the bread offered in the Church for the Divine Eucharist. Along with wine, as Holy Gifts (bread and wine), before being brought with the Great Entrance to the Holy Table, they are placed in the Prothesis (pre + place = to prepare), where, during the Proskomide (Preparation), they are prepared for the Divine Liturgy.

The round shape of the Prosphoro symbolizes the womb of the Virgin Mary, from which her only-begotten Son was born. The Prosphoro is embossed with a design formed by the seal.

From the center of the Prosphoro comes the Lamb, which is the central square of the design with the letters: IC XC NI KA (Jesus Christ conquers). These letters must be clear and distinctly visible. It is called the Lamb (arnaki), as the prophet Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be led to sacrifice like an innocent lamb.

The design of the Prosphoro also includes the portion of the Virgin Mary, with the letters M and Θ, meaning “Mother of God.” The triangular portion of the Virgin Mary is placed to the right of the Lamb.

From the 9 triangles on the right side of the Prosphoro, the portions of the angels and all saints are taken and placed to the left of the Lamb. Other parts of the Prosphoro are used for the living and the deceased, who belong to the Orthodox Church.
