Incense and Symbolism
Offering incense is a command of God, as stated in the Old Testament. This blessed custom is an element of Orthodox tradition and worship. “Let my prayer be set before You as incense,” is mentioned in the second verse of Psalm 141, which is read every evening during the Vespers service.
The incense symbolizes our prayer, which reaches the throne of God.
It is placed inside the censer, which symbolizes the human nature of Christ within the womb of His Holy Mother. The lit charcoal, on which the incense is placed, symbolizes the fire of divinity. The fire also represents divine love, which, like fire, should burn in the heart of every believer. Just as the charcoal burns, the incense heats up, melts, and releases its wonderful fragrance. The smoke and aroma rise high and symbolize the Christian’s prayer, which, when offered with the warmth of the heart, ascends to heaven and reaches God the Father.
The offering of incense is not only performed in the church during the services. Every Christian at home is encouraged to keep this beautiful and blessed tradition so that their prayer may be heard by God.
