Description

The monks of Orthodoxy craft beautiful incense burners as part of their other handicrafts. The incense burner is used in the Holy Church, at home, or on the graves of our loved ones.

Incense is essentially aromatic resin or gum that comes from the trunk of the frankincense tree, which is why it is also called frankincense.

The incense burned in the burner symbolizes our prayer rising to the throne of God, just as the smoke rises upward.

What does it symbolize?

The incense burner, where the charcoal is burned and the incense is placed, symbolizes the womb of the Theotokos, who physically received the Deity in her womb, which is “a consuming fire” without suffering any corruption or alteration. According to Saint Germanus, Patriarch of Constantinople, “The censer signifies the humanity of Christ, the fire the divinity, and the fragrant smoke indicates the fragrance of the Holy Spirit going before.”

In simpler terms, Saint Kosmas of Aetolia describes this symbolism, saying: “The incense burner represents the Lady, the Theotokos. Just as the charcoal is inside the censer and is not burned, so too the Theotokos received Christ and was not consumed, but rather was illuminated.”

Instructions for Use:

Place 1-2 pieces of charcoal in the ceramic incense burner after lighting them. Once the flame settles and the charcoal begins to smoke, place 4-5 pieces of incense with your chosen fragrance and allow them to release their fragrance.
