Description

The monks of Orthodoxy make beautiful censers, among their other handicrafts. The censer is used in the Holy Church, in the home or in the graves of our loved ones.

Incense is actually an aromatic resin or gum that comes out of the trunk of the Lebanon tree, which is why it is also called frankincense.

The incense burned in the censer symbolizes our prayer ascending to the throne of God, as its smoke rises upwards.

What does it symbolize?

The censer, where the coals are burned and the incense is placed, symbolizes the belly of the Virgin Mary, who received in her bowels bodily the Deity, who is “consuming fire”, without being damaged or altered. According to St. Germanos, Patriarch of Constantinople, “The censer indicates the humanity of Christ, the fire indicates the divinity, and the fragrant smoke sues the fragrance of the Holy Spirit ahead of us.”

Simply put, Saint Cosmas the Aetolian describes this symbolism, saying: “The censer means Despina, the Virgin Mary. Just as the coals are in the censer and do not burn, so Despina the Virgin Mary received Christ and was not burned, but even enlightened.”

Instructions:

Place 1-2 charcoal on the ceramic incense after lighting them. Once the flame calms down and they start smoking, place 4-5 pieces of incense with the aroma of your choice and let them smell.
