Description

Lithograph of Saint Andrew
Andrew bears a Greek name (from andreia, meaning bravery), which, like other Greek names, appears to have been common among Jews and Hellenized populations of Judea. No Hebrew or Aramaic name is recorded for him.

He was born between 5 and 10 AD in Bethsaida of Galilee. His parents were named Jonah (or John) and Joanna. Andrew and his brother Simon Peter were fishermen on the Sea of Tiberias, which is why, when Christ called them to follow Him, He told them, “I will make you fishers of men”.

The story of Andrew’s life up until the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension closely follows that of the other Apostles. Andrew was the one who told Christ about the child with the loaves and fishes, and when Philip wished to inform Jesus that some Greeks sought to see Him, he first spoke to Andrew. He was also one of the four disciples who, on the Mount of Olives, asked Jesus about the signs of His Second Coming.

Lithograph – Features
The art of lithography is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is widely used by monks to create outstanding works of religious art. In this particular piece, the iconographer-monk used a lithographed replica of Byzantine art and crafted this work following the traditional method of handmade aging. This technique results in a magnificent artwork with unique aesthetic value. The wood has been treated with special materials to ensure the longevity of the colors over time.
