The Holy Monastery of Vatopedi keeps 150 encolpia, mostly Byzantine, which constitute a panorama of ten centuries of art, technique and worship.

These objects of worship derive their strength from the holy relics they contain, but also from their iconographic themes.

The term “manual” hasa more general meaning. It refers both to “flat crosses” or “reliquary crosses”, and to any circular, rectangular or polygonal icon. Encolpia have a variety of materials, types and construction techniques, which is why their approach is multifaceted, with the general term “manuals” fully connecting them.

This collection is commented exhaustively by Mrs. Yiota Oikonomaki-Papadopoulou, art historian, the byzantinologist Dr. Brigitte Pitarakis and archaeologist Katia Loverdou-Tsigarida. The objects are depicted in magnification, with all details visible, while next to it is written the material of construction, the technique used, the dimensions and the dating of the encolpium.
