The first references to the mastic tree and Chios mastic date back to antiquity and primarily come from Herodotus (484-420 BC), who specifically mentions that in ancient Greece, people chewed the dried resinous liquid that flows from the bark of the mastic tree. In medical texts from late antiquity, there is an abundance of medical recipes featuring mastic as a primary ingredient, which was considered beneficial for human health and credited with numerous properties. It was typically used in combination with other natural ingredients to treat a variety of ailments.

Indeed, due to the strong anti-inflammatory action of oleanolic and ursolic acids (3-oxo-triterpenes), mastic acts as a healing agent, addressing inflammations in specific organs. Additionally, it prevents stagnation in these areas, thereby alleviating symptoms such as indigestion or bloating. Another modern scientific study, which led to the isolation and identification of ursolic and oleanolic acids, revealed and confirmed that many of mastic’s medicinal properties—including its anticancer, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, antimicrobial (against a wide range of pathogens such as Staphylococcus and Salmonella), anti-hyperlipidemic, and antiviral actions—can be primarily attributed to ursolic acid and its isomer, oleanolic acid. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the addition of natural Chios mastic to toothpaste, mouthwash solutions, and oral deodorants enhances the immune system of the tissues between teeth and gums, effectively combating plaque formation and other periodontal diseases.

The tincture is created by steeping herbs in an alcoholic solution (grapa), usually over a period of a few weeks. During this, the active ingredients of the herbs dissolve in the alcoholic solution. This specific process results in the tincture retaining all the beneficial properties of the herbs to the fullest.

15-20 drops in water twice a day for a month. Take a break for ten days and repeat. Shake before use.
