Authentic Athonite Myrrh

Authentic Myrrh from Mount Athos is a genuine monastic blessing. It is a beneficial oil containing a blend of plants and aromatic substances.

Athonite Myrrh: What does it symbolize?

Myrrh is also called “oil of thanksgiving,” “anointing of gratitude,” or “heavenly anointing.” Its symbolism in Orthodox tradition is profound and significant, as Myrrh represents the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Moreover, Myrrh symbolizes the fragrance of faith, the tenderness of the heart, and devotion to the Lord. As mentioned in the Gospel, a few days before the Crucifixion of Jesus, while He was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman approached Him carrying an alabaster jar of precious myrrh, which she poured over His head (Matt. 26:6-7).

From Myrrh, the Myrrh-bearing women derived their name. These women, who followed the Lord along with the Virgin Mary, stayed with her during the Passion of Jesus and prepared to anoint His body with myrrh, thus honoring their Teacher.

Mount Athos Myrrh: Preparation, Usage, and Properties!

The preparation or distillation of Myrrh is based on the biblical description given to Moses in the Book of Exodus. The relevant passage states: “Then the Lord said to Moses: Take the finest spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant calamus, 500 shekels of cassia—all according to the sanctuary shekel—and a hin of olive oil. Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil” (Exodus 30:22-25).
