Description

St. John’s Wort, also known as Balm or Hypericum, is a medicinal herb with antidepressant effects and strong anti-inflammatory properties. It is a small, herbaceous perennial plant that grows throughout Europe, Asia, North Africa, and other regions, featuring golden-yellow flowers that bloom from June to September. The usable parts of the plant include the entire above-ground portion as well as the flowering tops, with the fresh plant being more effective than the dried version.

Properties:

Antidepressant, Sedative: Medical studies have shown effectiveness comparable to that of anxiolytic medications for cases of anxiety, nervousness, and mild to moderate depression. Its effects become noticeable after consistent use for three months.

Expectorant: It is used to treat bronchitis, spasmodic cough, and asthma.

Emmenagogue: Regulates menstruation and alleviates physical and psychological symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause. It soothes menstrual cramps.

Diuretic: Helps with issues related to the gallbladder, gout, and the urinary system.

Tonic: Beneficial for weakened individuals during recovery and for jaundice. The infusion significantly stimulates the immune system.

Digestive: Relieves indigestion, dysentery, bloating, gastritis, and combats certain intestinal parasites.

Precaution:

  • It belongs to the list of herbs that should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • It should not be consumed by children under the age of 2.
  • Individuals with very fair skin should avoid prolonged sun exposure while taking St. John’s Wort, as it has been proven to increase existing photosensitivity.
  • The use of St. John’s Wort is contraindicated if the individual is concurrently taking: amphetamines, weight loss pills, the amino acid tryptophan, corticosteroid inhalers for respiratory issues, nasal decongestants, or narcotics.
  • Additionally, its concurrent consumption with beer, wine, smoked cold cuts, chocolate, pickles, and broad beans should be avoided.
