Description

Although mallow may not be a widely known herb, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have particularly good results in enhancing our health. Like all types of herbs, it can be quite effective for many ailments as well as in boosting the body, with rich nutritional and therapeutic properties. All parts of the plant are used: the leaves, roots, and stems. It contains small amounts of vitamins A, B1, B2, and C.

Mallow is one of the herbs that should definitely be present in every home.

It has been used as a medicinal plant for many centuries, dating back to around 700 BC. In Ancient Greece, it was believed to be able to alleviate hunger and thirst. Its leaves were known since ancient times as an edible vegetable, as well as for their medicinal properties. Today, it is used by pharmaceutical companies, as its flowers and leaves have soothing properties and contribute to treating coughs, skin inflammations, respiratory issues, eye problems, as well as disorders of the urinary and digestive systems, among others.

Medicinal and Therapeutic Properties of Mallow:

  • Astringent
  • Expectorant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • For bronchitis
  • Hoarseness
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Pneumonia
  • Gingivitis
  • For corns on the feet
  • A foot bath with the addition of mallow helps relieve swollen and tired feet.
  • It is believed that it can cure epilepsy.

As a poultice:

  • Swelling
  • Inflammations
  • Minor injuries (bruises, contusions, sprains)

Ways of use:

You can make an infusion or decoction and drink it to benefit from its medicinal properties. You will need:

  • 500ml of water
  • A handful of mallow
  • Honey

Bring the water to a boil. Once it’s ready, remove it from the heat and add the mallow. Cover it with a plate and let it steep for at least 15 minutes, allowing the water to absorb the nutrients. Afterward, strain it and either drink it or use it for gargling. Optionally, add a spoonful of honey for a sweeter taste.

You can combine it with chamomile. Boil the chamomile and the mallow separately, strain them well, and then mix them together in a cup.

It may help:

  • In the treatment of sore throat.
  • In cough relief.
  • In strengthening the function of the respiratory system.

Alternative ways of use:

  • The shoots and leaves can be added to recipes and dishes. They pair very well with legumes, meat, and rice.
  • You can make a poultice: There are two methods.
    • First method: Mash the parts of the herb in a mortar and place it on the affected area.
    • Second method: You will need: Water, Apple cider vinegar, Mallow. Instructions: Mash the mallow or chop it very finely and add a few drops of vinegar along with some water. Mix well until you get a paste. Apply it to the affected area and wrap it with a plastic wrap. Finally, place a gauze or clean towel over it to secure it.
