Description

Star anise is a plant that has been cultivated for its aromatic properties since ancient times. It is the anise of Dioscorides, who even referred to its properties as an herb that warms, facilitates breathing, alleviates pain, and quenches thirst. The ancient Greeks recommended it for colds. Hippocrates (460-370 BC) believed that star anise stopped sneezing. In Rome, the “Hippocratic wine” was widely used, which consisted of water, wine, and star anise. The Romans also used star anise in a special dessert, which they ate after meals to aid digestion.

Therapeutic Properties:
It is a warming, stimulating herb that improves digestion, acts beneficially on the liver and circulatory system. It helps with digestion and reduces binge eating. It has an expectorant action and is quite effective against colic in the internal muscles (stomach and intestines). It is used for asthma, cough, and irritation of the upper respiratory tract. It reduces fever, helps with hoarseness, and acts as a diaphoretic and antipyretic. It soothes stomach pain as well as nerves in cases of overexertion. It treats bronchitis, whooping cough, and hoarseness. It has diuretic properties and helps in the “detoxification” of the kidneys, liver, and pancreas. It tones the functions of vital organs (liver, heart, lungs, brain). Star anise has beneficial properties for the comprehensive treatment of psoriasis. It addresses sleep disorders (insomnia). For rheumatism, lumbago, cystitis. It strengthens the immune system and removes excess mucus. Pain: The essential oil is effective for all types of muscle pain in the body. Intoxication: It treats intoxication. Put three to four drops of essential oil on a handkerchief and smell it regularly to overcome intoxication.

Uses: In the kitchen, star anise leaves provide a subtle aroma to soups, vegetable pies, and salads, while adding flavor to cakes, breads, and various desserts. It is also used to flavor ouzo, tsipouro, various liqueurs and syrups, as well as toothpastes and soaps.

Methods of Use:
As an infusion, it is used for stomach issues. Boil 1 teaspoon of star anise leaves and seeds in 1 cup of water. Strain and drink.
For colic, boil 1 teaspoon of seeds in 1 cup of milk for 10 minutes…
By boiling dried star anise fruits in water, we can prepare an infusion which acts as a mild laxative.
As an infusion: One tablespoon of crushed seeds in a cup of boiling water. Let it sit for 10 minutes, strain, and drink.
For insomnia, drink milk with 1 tablespoon of crushed star anise seeds.
For toothache, add a little star anise essential oil to a cup of water and use it as a mouthwash. You will feel relief immediately.

Other Uses If you add some star anise to rancid oil, in 3-4 days the rancid odor will disappear. The smell and taste of the olive oil will return.
