Description

The milk thistle is an herb primarily used for its seeds, which are collected in the summer when they have completely dried. The seeds of milk thistle contain about 65%-80% silymarin, which is its main active ingredient.

Properties

1. Supports liver health

2. Promotes skin health

3. Reduces cholesterol

4. Helps in the control and prevention of diabetes.

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, milk thistle may help lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Even so, individuals with diabetes should be cautious. It has been discovered that one of the compounds in milk thistle may act in a similar way to some medications traditionally used for diabetes, helping to improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar. In fact, the results of a recent review and analysis showed that individuals who took silymarin regularly experienced a significant reduction in fasting blood sugar levels and HbA1c, a measure of blood sugar control.

Dosage

You can use one tea bag or 1 teaspoon of dried herb leaves in 1 cup (237 ml) of hot water for 5-10 minutes. Alternatively, you can add 1 teaspoon of dried seeds to a cup of boiling water and let it steep for 15-20 minutes.

The consumption of the tea is recommended up to 3 times a day.

  • People with diabetes: The effects of milk thistle in lowering blood sugar levels may put individuals with diabetes at risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It is important for those with diabetes to monitor their blood sugar levels regularly and consult their healthcare provider before using milk thistle.
