Description

The Myrtle (*Myrtus communis*) is an evergreen shrub with aromatic white or pink flowers. It mainly grows in Mediterranean regions, and its essential oil is distilled from the leaves, branches, and flowers of the plant. It contains cineole, myrtenol, pinene, geraniol, limonene, coumarin, and other active ingredients with therapeutic properties for the human body.

Myrtle has been known since ancient times for its beneficial properties. The ancient Greek physician Dioscorides referred to it as a medicine for treating respiratory infections and bladder issues.

In modern aromatherapy, it is mainly used for respiratory conditions and skincare. It is a non-toxic, gentle essential oil, very suitable for children and the elderly. It is particularly recommended for respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, colds, and coughs. It can be placed in a child’s bedroom to relieve intense nighttime coughing.

There are indications that it may also help treat urinary tract infections. Myrtle also has astringent properties that make it useful for the care of oily and mature skin, as well as skin with open pores and acne.

The sweet scent of Myrtle may have a positive effect on the nervous system and mental state.

Precaution:

Essential oils are natural, effective, and particularly pleasant to use. Their therapeutic properties can benefit everyone. However, they should be treated like medicines with caution and care, following the recommended dosage.

  • Essential oils should not be used for ingestion (except for oregano, thyme, basil, and peppermint essential oils) and without the advice of a doctor.
  • During pregnancy, especially in the first 5 months of gestation.
  • By people suffering from hypertension.
  • By people with severe nervous disorders.
  • On infants (children under one year old).

Essential oils should be used with caution in the following cases:

  • Some essential oils (e.g., Bergamot, Neroli, Lemon, etc.) can cause skin photosensitivity to ultraviolet rays from the sun. In general, we advise avoiding intense sun exposure for 4 hours after aromatherapy (massage).
  • Essential oils should be used diluted in a base (e.g., carrier oil) when applied to the skin. We recommend not using undiluted essential oils directly on the skin.
  • “Vulnerable” age groups (children and people over 60) should use essential oils in reduced ratios.
