Description

Myrrh is a resin, a liquid substance derived from a tree called *Commiphora myrrha*, which is commonly found in Africa and the Middle East. Myrrh is botanically related to frankincense and is one of the most widely used essential oils in the world.

To harvest myrrh, the trunks of the trees must be pierced to release the resin. The resin is left to dry and begins to resemble tears along the trunk of the tree. The resin is then collected, and the essential oil is produced from the liquid through steam distillation.

The oil from myrrh has a sweet or sometimes bitter aroma that resembles smoke. It is commonly used as a base for perfumes and other fragrances.

Myrrh essential oil is still used today as a medicine for a variety of conditions. Researchers have started to take an interest in myrrh due to its strong antioxidant activity and its potential as a cancer treatment. It has also been shown to be effective in fighting certain types of parasitic infections.

Precaution:

Essential oils are natural, effective, and particularly pleasant to use. Their therapeutic properties can benefit everyone. However, they should be treated like medicines with caution and care, following the recommended dosage.

  • Essential oils should not be used for ingestion (except for oregano, thyme, basil, and peppermint essential oils) and without the advice of a doctor.
  • During pregnancy, especially in the first 5 months of gestation.
  • By people suffering from hypertension.
  • By people with severe nervous disorders.
  • On infants (children under one year old).

Essential oils should be used with caution in the following cases:

  • Some essential oils (e.g., Bergamot, Neroli, Lemon, etc.) can cause skin photosensitivity to ultraviolet rays from the sun. In general, we advise avoiding intense sun exposure for 4 hours after aromatherapy (massage).
  • Essential oils should be used diluted in a base (e.g., carrier oil) when applied to the skin. We recommend not using undiluted essential oils directly on the skin.
  • “Vulnerable” age groups (children and people over 60) should use essential oils in reduced ratios.
