Pennyroyal Essential Oil – Monastic Recipes

The aromatic Wild Mint, also known as Pennyroyal, is a perennial, self-sown plant.

Ancient physicians frequently mentioned it as a plant of significant medicinal and ornamental value, using it in numerous applications. Wild Mint essential oil is derived from the steam distillation of its leaves and possesses a cool, sharp, fresh menthol aroma.

Pennyroyal is the richest species in terms of components within the mint genus. It contains the highest amounts of menthol among all mint varieties, as well as tannins, tocopherols, flavonoids, choline, alcohols, and many other trace elements and minerals.

Wild Mint essential oil has excellent antispasmodic properties, making it ideal for relieving stomach and intestinal pain, as well as discomfort caused by intestinal spasms.

It is also highly effective as an emmenagogue, stimulating menstrual function, and as a choleretic, aiding liver function.

Moreover, it has antiseptic properties, soothing coughs and nasal congestion, and is ideal for gargles in cases of tonsillitis, nasal inflammations, gingivitis, and bad breath. It also acts as a tonic and analgesic for headaches, migraines, dizziness, nausea, and toothaches. Additionally, research has shown that due to its phenolic compounds, Pennyroyal has strong antioxidant properties, inhibiting the negative effects of free radicals.

When added to massage oil, it alleviates physical fatigue, muscle pain, arthritis, and rheumatism. As a supplement in cosmetic products, it rejuvenates sunburned and stressed skin, relieving itchiness, inflammations, acne, and herpes.

Finally, in an aromatic spray, it enhances concentration, repels insects, and removes unpleasant odors from rooms.

Caution:
Essential oils are natural, effective, and particularly pleasant to use. Their therapeutic properties can benefit everyone. However, they should be treated as medicines with prudence and care, following the recommended dosage.

Essential oils should not be used for ingestion (except for oregano, thyme, basil, and mint essential oils) and only under medical advice.
During pregnancy, especially in the first five months.
By individuals suffering from hypertension.
By individuals with severe nervous disorders.
On infants (children under one year old).
Essential oils should be used cautiously in the following cases:
Some essential oils (e.g., Bergamot, Bitter Orange, Lemon) can cause skin photosensitivity under UV rays. Generally, we advise avoiding strong sun exposure for 4 hours after aromatherapy (massage).
Essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil (e.g., base oil) when applied to the skin. Avoid using undiluted essential oils directly on the skin.
“Vulnerable” age groups (children and individuals over 60) should use essential oils in reduced ratios.
