Description

Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Mount Athos, Made from a Unique Olive Variety (Athonite Cherry Olive)

In recent years, the organic cultivation of the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos’ estates has led to the production of this exceptional organic olive oil, available in limited quantities. This Extra Virgin Olive Oil boasts an acidity level of just 0.1%. It provides a wealth of nutrients to the body, making it a beneficial and essential ingredient in our diet. Its high content of vitamins and fatty acids helps combat free radicals, which are particularly harmful to health. Known as the “gold of the Mediterranean” and the cornerstone of the famous Mediterranean diet, this olive oil represents the finest version of its kind.

Ingredients and Properties

Olive oil is rich in vitamin E, monounsaturated fatty acids (up to 83%), and antioxidants, such as polyphenols. It is also an abundant source of monounsaturated fats, which reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood lipids. In fact, the World Health Organization recommends the daily consumption of two tablespoons of olive oil for heart protection.

The protective role of monounsaturated fatty acids in managing cholesterol levels is now widely recognized. A significant portion of olive oil’s health benefits is attributed to its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, its phenolic compounds contribute to the prevention and protection against cardiovascular risk factors, offering anti-inflammatory and chemoprotective properties. Specifically, oleocanthal in olive oil is noted for its strong anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, research suggests a positive relationship between monounsaturated fat intake and bone density.

Mediterranean Diet

Today, olive oil is the foundation of the Mediterranean dietary pyramid, proven to be a model of healthy and balanced nutrition and a factor in longevity. The 2006 European EUROLIVE study provided solid evidence for the protective role of olive oil’s phenolic components. Conducted on 200 healthy volunteers from across Europe, this study highlighted its protection against oxidative stress. Specifically, it showed increased HDL (good cholesterol) levels and reduced markers of lipid oxidative stress. Furthermore, the study indicated a 13% reduction in DNA oxidation markers, comparable to the effects observed after quitting smoking.
