Weaving Art

Weaving is an ancient art that fulfills one of humanity’s basic needs: the need to warm the body and protect it from the elements. Weaving is part of Folk Art and, along with embroidery and knitting, forms the three types of handicrafts that meet the clothing needs of households and individuals. It has been considered a women’s craft since the time of Homer (Penelope, Circe). It is unknown when and where the technique of weaving first began. Excavations have shown that weaving originated in Egypt, later spreading to Mesopotamia, and more recent excavations suggest Southern Siberia as the place of origin. Since the time humans replaced animal skins with fabric, we have seen the beginning of weaving. In Greece, it started during the Neolithic era. The fibers used for weaving included both plant and animal materials (cotton, linen, wool, silk).
