At the center is the Cross of Martyrdom, with the Virgin Mary positioned below and to the right, and to the left, the beloved disciple and apostle, Saint John the Theologian. The Crucifixion of Christ is considered the ultimate sacrifice, an unprecedented act of love by Jesus for all humanity. This is why the cross is regarded as the central symbol of the Orthodox Church and the Christian faith in general, as it reminds us of Christ’s Crucifixion and the salvation of mankind through His Passion and Death. Therefore, it symbolizes both Christ Himself and the faith of Christians.

Wood Carved Icon: Characteristics

This particular wood carved icon belongs to a unique category of images – works of art renowned for their exceptional details in depicting saints. It is a one-of-a-kind piece created using the “pressing” technique and made from lime wood. It is crafted in accordance with Orthodox Christian Tradition.

After the initial processing and sanding of the wood, the icon is painted with eco-friendly colors, followed by a pest control process to preserve the wood in excellent condition for over 100 years.
